Le Cipolle di Tropea...
The Cipolla di Tropea has been a proud fixture during the summer period at Franks Fruit Market for as long as Frank’s been in Haberfield. These voluptuous rare, bright red pearls have lured many a refined palette during their very brief annual appearance.
Their shiny pink colour breaks through the beautiful brown earth from which they grew, that still clings to them. Beneath this rough outer layer is a silky smooth, white, super sweet and apple like crunchy flesh that makes you question whether it really is an onion you’re eating.
A local grower has been growing these fruits of the earth on his small farm on the outskirts of Sydney for over 40 years. They are a labour of love and as with most of our locally grown produce you can feel the love and dedication even as they hang proudly in you kitchen.
The only way to eat these beauties is in a big salad bowl accompanied by rich red vine ripened tomatoes, a touch of basil, lots of olive oil and crusty Pane di Casa to soak up those rich, creamy juices.
